Department of Eagles-In Ear Park (2008)
Members Fred Nicolaus and Daniel Rossen met at NYU close to ten years ago. They formed the band around their time of meeting and have just released a more than ok, a sufficient new LP, In Ear Park. This album is aurally expansive. Large kick drums, layered vocals, guitars, and banjos hitting in an enjoyable minor key. Some of the songs on the album sound as if they were classically composed and then arranged for recording. Nicolaus and Rossen draw from the Beatles and the Beach Boy's pop sensibilities without stepping into artists Caribou or Panda Bear's territories that have been marked in recent time. They also pull from Rossen's full time band Grizzly Bear. The combinations of those influences makes for a quality breakthrough album. This is successful because it doesn't completely sound like a Grizzly Bear side project but something of its own. So if you still pinch of space in your heart for Williamsburg, this would be a good addition to your collection. Listen.
